Offshore Software Development
Offshore software development means a vendor team, in another country, that owns delivery of a product or system rather than just supplying hands. SofinWave runs offshore teams from Vietnam for US and European clients: we take a defined outcome, staff the roles it needs, and are accountable for shipping it. You get progress you can verify — running software, not status decks.
What the team looks like
An offshore team is staffed to the work rather than to a template. A typical product team pairs engineers with the supporting roles that stop delivery from stalling.
- A technical lead accountable for architecture and code quality.
- Backend, frontend, and mobile engineers sized to the scope.
- QA embedded in the team rather than bolted on at the end.
- A delivery lead who runs the cadence and is your single point of contact.
How delivery runs
The process is deliberately boring, because predictability is the point. Work moves in short iterations with a demo at the end of each, so you never have to take progress on trust.
- Discovery first: goals, constraints, and success metrics written down before code.
- Iterations of one to two weeks, each ending in a demo of working software.
- Automated tests and CI from the first commit, not retrofitted before launch.
- Releases into your environment through a repeatable pipeline.
What you keep control of
Offshoring delivery does not mean giving up oversight. The artefacts that matter stay yours and stay visible throughout.
- Your repositories, your cloud accounts, your CI — we work inside them.
- Full commit history and code review visibility from day one.
- Architecture decisions written down and approved by you before implementation.
- Documentation maintained as part of the work, so handover is not a separate project.
When offshore development is the wrong choice
If the requirements change faster than they can be written down, or the work depends on constant access to people inside your business, a vendor team will struggle regardless of quality. In that situation a dedicated team inside your own process, or staff augmentation, usually works better — and we will say so rather than sell you the larger engagement.
Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from a dedicated team?
- Accountability. With offshore development we own the outcome and run our own process. With a dedicated team, your managers run the process and the engineers work inside it. Offshore development costs more per engineer and removes more management load from you.
- How do we track progress?
- Through working software at the end of every iteration, plus direct access to the repository and issue tracker. If a progress report is the only evidence of progress, something has gone wrong.
- What if we want to bring the work in-house later?
- That is a normal outcome, and the engagement is set up for it. Documentation and tests are produced throughout, and handover terms are agreed at the start rather than negotiated under pressure.
- Do you work fixed-price or time-and-materials?
- Both. Fixed-price suits well-defined scope; time-and-materials suits work that will evolve. See engagement models for how we decide which to propose.
